One of the most common problems with
using the Internet and downloading files and programs at this time
is the risk of installing adware. Adware, often known as "spyware" is
software that is given to the user with advertisements already embedded
in the application. This advertising software can create unwanted pop-ups,
exploit your internet browser, gather your information and send it
to advertisers, and much more.
Here are a few things you can do
to protect yourself from Adware:
1. Always read the EULA (End-User
License Agreement) for any software you download and/or install.
Many of the adware applications explain
the nature of the services performed that are not plainly visible when
you are running the application with the adware installed in the EULA.
However, many users do not read this agreement. It is worth taking
some extra time to make sure you are aware of all of the terms of the
agreement. If you are not comfortable with any of the terms in the
EULA, do not install or use the software.
2. Make sure your browser settings
are secure. ActiveX controls should be set to download upon prompt
only, or disabled depending on the source.
3. Free isn't always free. If you
are downloading a program that you do not need to pay for to use (commonly
called "freeware" and "shareware"), chances are
there is Adware installed to help pay for the costs of the products.
As mentioned, completely read the EULA before installing any freeware
or shareware.
Removing Adware can be tricky. However,
2 of the most popular adware removal tools are Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/)
and SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/).
These programs look for thousands of existing adware applications,
and remove them safely from your system.
