Question categories:  Domain Registration

When I transfer a domain from another registrar, what happens with the expiration date?

Answer by: Stuart Pierce, Knowledge Base Support

The registration date stays the same but the new period of registration with the new registrar is added to your expiration date.

Example: Your domain name is due to expire on September 10th, 2010; you initiate a transfer in April 2005 and register this domain for one year; after the transfer your expiration date will be September 10th, 2011.

Note: The only exception is when you have just registered a domain name for the maximum allowed period of 10 years, and you decide to transfer this domain name in the first year of registration. The rule is that a domain name cannot be registered for more than a 10 year period.
