What is a “utility domain”?

The utility domain is an integral part of the following Aplus.Net hosting plans: Personal Unix, Business Class Unix, Pro Unix, eCommerce Unix, Personal Windows, Business Class Windows, Pro Windows, and eCommerce Windows. This utility domain enables customers to directly access the files associated with their web space, regardless of the status of their registered domain names. You can use the utility domain to gain access over most of the services available in your Web Control Panel (http://cp.aplus.net) even if your actual domain is still not resolving to the Aplus.Net’s hosting servers.

A utility domain serves a different function than a registered domain name. Utility domains function as the “back door” to your web space:  you’re able to use them to gain access (via a browser) to your web space, but they are not as marketable or elegant as your “front door”. You should always associate a registered domain name with your hosting plan. With registered domains, you can create a uniquely identifiable name that is associated with both your web space and your e-mail.

The URL of your utility domain depends on your Main FTP username. All Aplus.Net utility domains follow the same general formula:

UNIX-based Plans: http://yourftpusername.web.aplus.net

Windows-based Plans: http://yourftpusername.win.aplus.net

Important: You cannot remove your utility domain under any circumstances.
