what is the smart Console?

Answer by: George Kaloyanov, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support

The Smart Console is a console management device that allows a dedicated server customer to have “out-of-band” access to the server. It provides low level access to both Unix-based and Windows-based servers for emergency management. Dedicated server customers can use this service to connect to the server via the serial port in case of a major TCP/IP stack failure.

Features and benefits:

  • Minimizing your server downtime by having a complete control over your dedicated server at root level:
    • The Smart Console allows any Command Line Interface (CLI) command to be executed via the serial port.
    • You can quickly reboot your server or kill any consuming server processes through the console management to avoid unnecessary server downtime.
    • You can act quickly in emergency situations like TCP/IP stack failure with no dependency on Data Center personnel.
  • Easy to use web interface that can be accessed anywhere. All you need is web browser with Java Virtual Machine installed. Here is how to access the web interface of the Smart Console:
  • Go to https://216.55.169.161.
  • Login using the username and password you received on your contact email.
  • All popular SSH clients are supported for the Unix-based servers. Here is how to access the Smart Console through SSH:
  • SSH to IP 216.55.169.161 on Port 7000.
  • Login using the username and password you received on your contact email.
  • Remote connection is available for the Windows-based servers through Microsoft’s Emergency Management Services.
  • SSH v2 encryption keeps all your data secure. Furthermore the Smart Console service keeps logs for all console interaction with the server and all access attempts.

Note: The Microsoft Emergency Management Services (EMS) work at kernel level and allow the following actions:

  • Reconfigure IP settings to regain “in-band” connectivity.
  • Reboot or shut down the server.
  •  List all used and available server resources.
  • List all server process. Kill or limit a server process if necessary.
  • Create command prompt channels for access to the file system.
  • Run text-based applications: traceroute, telnet, etc.
