I have a Unix-based shared hosting plan. Does Aplus.Net support sftp?

Answer by: Stuart Pierce, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support.

The Aplus.Net Unix-based shared hosting servers support a secure FTP connection for the upload of your web files. However, such a connection could not be established with a web browser or the File Manager tool - you have to use a local FTP client which supports one of the secure protocols described below.

The available secure FTP connection protocols are FTPS and SFTP. Please read below for details and availability concerning these two types of secure FTP.

I. FTPS protocol: makes use of the standard FTP protocol over SSL/TLS. The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol was used as the basis of the TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol and both terms can be used interchangeably.

Owners of all Unix-based shared hosting plans (Personal Unix, Business Class Unix, Pro, eCommerce Unix) can use the FTPS protocol. Please consult the help section of your local FTP client for information on how to utilize an FTPS connection.

Example with SmartFTP client settings:

II. SFTP protocol: provides a secure FTP connection using the SSH (Secure SHell) protocol version 2 (SSH2). Below is described how to upload files to your hosting server using SFTP and an SFTP client, in particular WinSCP. WinSCP is open source software which can be downloaded from http://winscp.net/eng/download.php and installed on your local Windows machine.

  1. How to enable SSH access:

In order to use SFTP, you need SSH access to your Unix-based shared hosting server. This is achieved by faxing a copy of your Photo ID or Drivers License to (661) 752-7775. Be sure to include your registration number and/or main FTP username with your request. After we receive the proper information, our UNIX administrator will set up a shell account for you.

Important: SSH access and, respectively, the use of the SFTP protocol are available to the following Unix-based shared hosting plans:

  • Personal Unix XR, Pro, eCommerce Unix.
  1. Creating your SSH Private Key:

To use the WinSCP client in order to establish an SFTP connection, you will need to create a private/public key pair and save it to your local computer. The public key has to be submitted through the Aplus.Net Control Panel. The required steps are outlined in the following Knowledge Base article (steps 1-15):

  1. Logging to your Aplus.Net FTP account using the WinSCP client:
Start by launching the WinSCP program on your computer and enter the following information:
  1. Host name: enter your hosted domain name.
  2. Port number: should be 22.
  3. User name: enter the main FTP username associated with your hosting plan.
  4. Password: enter your FTP password.
  5. Private key file: browse to the private key file you have saved on your computer.
  6. Protocol: select SFTP.

Now, select the SSH tab, choose 2 as preferred SSH protocol version and click Login.
