Answer by: Stuart Pierce, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support

WHAT IS JOOMLA:

Joomla is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla can be used to easily manage every aspect of your website, from adding content and images to updating a product catalog or taking online reservations. Joomla is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable. It is available for installation through the Aplus.Net Control Panel for the following Unix-based hosting plans:

  • Pro Unix
  • eCommerce Unix

Once Joomla is installed and running, it is simple for even non-technical users to add or edit content, update images, and to manage the critical data that makes your company or organization go. Via a simple, browser-based interface you will be able to easily add new press releases or news items, manage staff pages, job listings, product images, and create an unlimited amount of sections or content pages on your site.

THE JOOMLA EXTENSIONS:

Out of the box, Joomla does a great job of managing your website content. But for many people, the true power of Joomla lies in the application framework that makes it possible for thousands of developers around the world to create powerful add-ons and extensions. Here are just some examples of the hundreds of available extensions:

  • Dynamic form builders
  • Business or organizational directories
  • Document management
  • Image and multimedia galleries
  • E-commerce and shopping cart engines
  • Email newsletters
  • Data collection and reporting tools
  • Banner advertising systems
  • Subscription services

You can find more examples at the Joomla Extensions Directory.

HOW TO INSTALL:

Here is how you can install the Joomla CMS using the Aplus.Net Control Panel:

  1. Start by logging into the Aplus.Net Control Panel at http://cp.aplus.net using your Registration Number and Customer Password.
  2. Select Web Hosting from the top navigation bar.
  3. Next, select Hosted Domains and click on Manage Hosted Domains.
  4. Now, select the hosted domain that you’d like to manage.
  5. Click the Design tab.
  6. Click the Joomla icon.
  7. Type in your Administrator password in the respective text field. Your Administrator username will be the same as your main FTP username.
  8. Type in your Administrator email in the respective text field.
  9. This tool uses a MySQL database. Please choose a database from your existing ones using the respective drop-down menu.

Note: The tool will suggest the optimal database but you have the full control to select which one should be used for the installation.

  1. Choose the Install location of your Joomla using the respective radio buttons. You have two options here:
    1. To install Joomla in your main /html directory. The Joomla Homepage URL would be: http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php
Note: In order to change your Joomla Homepage URL to http://yourdomain.com, you have to delete any existing index.html or index.htm files.
    1. To install Joomla in a subdomain of your domain name (in this case you can also modify the subdomain name from joomla to whatever name you like). The Joomla Homepage URL would be: http://joomla.yourdomain.com
  1. Finally, click Install.

You can now use the Administer link to go to the Control Panel of your Joomla. Click the View link to go to the Joomla Homepage.
