i am using the coppermine photo gallery. how can i upload photos to my gallery?

Answer by: George Kaloyanov, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support

Coppermine is a multi-purpose, fully-featured web picture gallery written in PHP and using a MySQL database. It is available for installation through the Aplus.Net Control Panel for the following Unix-based hosting plans:

  • Business Class Unix
  • Pro Unix
  • eCommerce Unix

With Coppermine, you have two options to upload your photos:

  • Using the automated HTTP upload through the Coppermine Administrative Panel. Recommended for uploading relatively small number of picture files.
  • Manual upload using FTP for uploading picture files in bulk or large photos with a file size greater than 8MBs. Recommended for advanced users familiar with FTP.

I. Automated HTTP Upload through the Coppermine Administrative Panel:

  1. Start by logging into the Aplus.Net Control Panel at http://cp.aplus.net using your Registration Number and Customer Password.
  2. Select Web Hosting from the top navigation bar.
  3. Next, select Hosted Domains and click on Manage Hosted Domains.
  4. Now, select the hosted domain that you’d like to manage.
  5. Click the Design tab.
  6. Click the Coppermine Photo Gallery icon.
  7. Go to the Config section.
  8. Click the Upload Files button. You will be automatically logged into your Coppermine Administrative Panel and redirected to the File Uploads section.
  9. You can upload up to 5 files at the same time from your local computer to the hosting server with this option. Use the browse buttons to select the local picture files you’d like to upload to the gallery and click Continue.

Important: By default Coppermine is configured to allow a maximum upload file size of 1MB. You can reconfigure this option to the maximum of 8MBs. You have to use the FTP option, if you need to upload larger files:

  1. Go to the Config tab of the Coppermine Administrative Panel.
  2. Expand the Files and thumbnails settings menu
  3. Change the Max size for uploaded files (KB) setting. The Default is 1024KBs (1MB).
  4. Click the Save new configuration button to apply the change.
  5. Click the Upload File link located on the top navigation bar to return to the File Uploads section. Go back to step 9.
  1. You will see a confirmation for the successfully uploaded files. Click Continue to assign the newly uploaded photos to a specific album.
  2. Select the Album for each newly uploaded picture file from the respective dropdown menu and click Continue. Repeat this step for each uploaded file.

Note: The File title, File description, and Keywords fields are optional.

  1. Once the last uploaded file is assigned to a specific album, you will receive a confirmation message upon clicking the Continue button.

II. Manual upload through FTP:

  1. Establish an FTP connection to your hosting space using your favorite FTP Client software.
  1. Open the folder named albums located inside your Coppermine installation directory. The exact path depends on the installation location you have chosen during the installation process:
    1. If you have installed Coppermine in a sub folder of your main /html folder, the path is {home}/html/cpg/albums/
    2. If you have installed Coppermine in a subdomain (e.g. named cpg), the path is {home}/cpg/html/albums
  2. Create a subfolder inside the albums folder for the pictures you’d like to upload. Do not use “dots” in the subfolder name. We also highly recommend refraining from the use of any other special characters. Use only a-z, numbers and dashes.

Important: Do not upload your pictures to the userpics or edit subfolders that are already present inside the albums folder. These folders are internally used by Coppermine and must not be used for any other purpose.

  1. Upload your picture files to the newly created subfolder.
  2. Go to your Coppermine homepage and login using your Administrator username and password.
  3. Click on the Batch add file button.
  4. Find the directory under which you have uploaded your photos. Select this directory by clicking on it. You will see a preview of all picture files located in the selected directory. Click ok to continue.
  5. Select the photos you wish to upload (by ticking them). New pictures are automatically pre-selected, while those already in your Coppermine database are not selected.
  6. Select the Album you’d like to put the pictures in. Click Insert selected files.
  7. Coppermine will then display the results of the Batch-Add.

III. Coppermine Documentation:

An extensive documentation (in HTML format) for the Coppermine Photo Gallery is uploaded to your FTP space as part of the installation process. The documentation is located in a folder named docs which is created inside your Coppermine installation directory.

Examples:

  1. If you have installed your Coppermine Photo Gallery in a sub directory of your /html, the documentation will be located at:
  2. If you have installed your Coppermine Photo Gallery in a subdomain named cpg, the documentation will be located at:
