Today, when we search the web, we are bombarded
with slick new web designs that move, animate, and flash graphics
across the screen. These new technologies, however exciting, are
often misused and dramatically slow the speed of a site, in addition
to compromising the time of the visitor. This is especially true
with large animated .gifs and complex Flash programs.
Although there are more broadband users
today than ever before, never design a site specifically for them.
There are still 28.8 Baud modem users out there, and designing your
site so waiting time exceeds 10 seconds will send those users to
a competitor's site.
Web designers need to keep sites simple.
Far too many, especially newer web designers, have 'fixated on the
gold when they have not yet mastered the silver.' With this in mind:
|
1.
|
Use graphics only when essential
|
|
2.
|
Use .gif animations only when absolutely,
positively, and unavoidably necessary (which is rare)
|
|
3.
|
Use simple backgrounds. Avoid large, intricate
backgrounds that hinder the readability of your text and
increase load time
