Filezilla
is a popular FTP client. It is free to download and use, and its setup
is uncomplicated. Filezilla is extremely useful in case you have to
upload
a
larger number of files and manage your folder structure. With this
step-by-step guide, you will be connecting to Filezilla and uploading your website
in minutes.
Note:
The screenshots are taken with Filezilla Win32 Client version 3.1.5.1
- You
May use the Quick Connect options on the top, but for this guide we
will use the site manager. Initially, you will need to setup a new
connection so that in the future a simple click on the Site icon will
immediately access your account. To do this, open the “File” menu. Then
Click on “Site Manager…”.
- Click on “New
Site…”.
Now you’ll have to enter a name for the connection profile you are
making. Enter an appropriate title for your connection using the “New
Site” text field underneath My Sites.
- Type your domain name
in the “Host” text field. If your domain name does not yet resolve to Aplus.Net’s
shared hosting server, you have to use your utility domain name. Set the "Port" field to 21. The "Servertype" field should say "FTP - File Transfer Protocol".
- Change the Logontype to "normal". Enter your FTP username
and password in the respective fields.
- Select the “Transfer Settings” tab from
the top. Mark the "transfer mode" as Active. Place a check on "Limit number of simultaneous connections" and set "Maximum number of connections" to 1. Then click OK.
- You
will be back to the main FileZilla window. This is what you will see
when you open Filezilla again in the future. To Connect to yoursite,
click on the arrow next to the Connection Manager icon (see screenshot below) and click on the name you gave your site.
- You
will be connected to your domain's ftp space. On the left, you will see
a local site pane. Here you can browse and select files/folders from
your computer's harddrive. On the right you will see a Remote Site
pane. Here you can browse and select files/folders on your site. You
can now use Filezilla to upload, download, move, rename, or delete
files on your site.
- To
Upload a file or folder, you may drag and drop them as you do on your
computer. You may also right-click a file from the local site and
choose "upload" to move it onto the site. Remember that in order for
files to be seen on your site, they must be placed into the proper
hosting folder on the remote site. For Unix-based plans, this folder is
named "html" and for Windows-based plans this is called "WWWROOT". In either case, remember to rename your home page "index.html" and leave it in the html or wwwroot folder.
