How do I set up dial-up networking for Windows?

Here’s how to connect to Aplus.Net’s dial-up service from your Windows-based computer:

I. Windows 95/98 Setup Instructions

  1. Start by double-clicking on the My Computer icon.
  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  3. Double-click on Make New Connection.
  4. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing… field, enter Aplus.Net. Click Next to continue.
  5.  Enter your access number into the Area Code and Telephone Number fields. Click Next to continue.
  6. Click Finish to complete the setup process.
  7. Return to the Dial-up Networking window and double-click the Aplus.Net icon that the wizard has just created. This will open a new dialogue box.
  8. Enter your Dial-up Username (i.e dialin@abac.com) and Password into the appropriate fields in the Connect To dialogue box.
  9. Click Connect to connect to the internet.

II. Windows NT 4.0 Setup Instructions

  1. Double-click on My Computer located on your desktop.
  2. Now double-click the Dial-up Networking icon.
  3. In the Dial-up Networking dialogue, click the New… button found under the Phonebook entry to dial... drop-down menu. If the phone book wizard appears, check the I already know about phone books checkbox and press Next.
  4. In the New Phonebook Entry dialogue box, select the Basic tab.
  5. For Entry name, enter Aplus.Net. Leave the Comment field blank.
  6. Enter the Area Code and Phone Number for your access number into the appropriate fields.
  7. Click OK to continue. You will be returned to the Dial-up Networking dialogue.
  8. Click Dial to connect to the Internet. You will be prompted for your Dial-up Username (i.e dialin@abac.com) and Password as soon as you have established a connection to the dial-up server.

III. Windows 2000 Setup Instructions

  1. Begin by right-clicking the My Network Places icon found on your desktop. Select Properties from the pop-up menu that appears.
  2.  In the Network and Dial-up Connectors window, double-click on the Make New Connection. This will start the Network Connection Wizard.
  3. Click the Next button.
  4. Under Network Connection Type, select the Dial-up to the Internet radio button. Click Next to continue.
  5. You will now see the Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard screen. Select the I want to set up my Internet connection manually... radio button. Click Next to continue.
  6. On the Setting up your Internet connection screen, select the I connect through a phone line and modem radio button. Click Next to continue.
  7. On the Internet account connection information screen, enter the Area Code and Phone Number of your access number into the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  8. On the Internet account login information screen, enter your Dial-up Username (i.e. username@abac.com) and Password into the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  9. On the Configuring your computer screen, enter Aplus.Net into the Connection Name field. Click Next to continue.
  10. On the Set Up Your Internet Mail Account screen, answer No to Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now? Click Next to continue.
  11. You should now see the Completing the Internet Connection Wizard screen. Uncheck the To connect to the Internet immediately… checkbox. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
  12. Now double-click the Internet Explorer icon found on your desktop (or, alternatively start any other application that requires an Internet connection). This will open a window entitled Connect Aplus.Net. Click Dial to connect to the Internet.

IV. Windows ME Dial Up Networking Setup

  1. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Dial-Up Networking. This will open the Dial-Up Networking window.
  2. Double-click Make New Connection.
  3. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing… field, enter Aplus.Net. Click Next to continue.
  4. Enter the Area Code and Telephone Number of your access number into the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  5. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
  6. In the Dial-Up Networking window, double-click the Aplus.Net icon. This will open the Connect To dialogue box.
  7. Enter your Dial-up Username (i.e. user@abac.com) and Password into the appropriate fields in the Connect To dialogue.
  8. Click the Save Password checkbox.
  9. Click Connect to connect to the internet.

V. Windows XP Dial Up Networking Setup

Windows XP Home Edition (XP Professional users: skip to Step 3.)

  1. From the Start Menu, choose Network Connections. This will open the Network Connections window. 
  2. Double-click the New Connection Wizard icon. Skip to Step 5.
    • Windows XP Professional Edition
  3. From the Start Menu, choose Connect To, and then select Show All Connections.
  4. Click on Create a New Connection. This will open the New Connection Wizard.
  5. You will now see the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard screen. Click Next to continue.
  6. Select the Connect to the Internet radio button and click Next to continue.
  7. Next, click the Set up my connection manually radio button and click Next to continue.
  8. Click the Connect using a dial-up modem radio button. Click Next to continue.
  9. Enter Aplus.Net into the ISP Name field. Click Next to continue.
  10. Enter your access number into the Phone Number field. Enter only the digits that you would need to enter if you were dialing the number using your phone’s handset. Click Next to continue.
  11. Enter your Dial-up Username (i.e. user@abac.com) and Password into the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  12. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard screen, check the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop… checkbox.  Click Finish.
  13. Return to your Desktop. Double-click the new Connect Aplus.Net icon. This will open a new dialogue window.
  14. In the Connect Aplus.Net window, click Dial to connect to the internet.
