How do I create a Data Source Name (DSN) using the Aplus.Net Control Panel?

Answer by: Stuart Pierce, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support.

Data Source Names are textual strings used by application programs to reference data sources. ODBC data sources store information about how to connect to the indicated data provider (i.e. Microsoft SQL database).

You can create MSSQL or MS Access Data Source Names using the DSN Manager tool available in the Aplus.Net Control Panel. It is included with the following Windows-based hosting plans:

  • Business Class Windows (2 DSNs)
  • Pro Windows (8 DSNs)
  • eCommerce Windows  (10 DSNs)

NOTE: You must provide a unique identifier for each data source. In other words, the name that you select for your DSN (Data Source Name) must be unique.

Here’s how to create a DSN using the Aplus.Net Control Panel:

  1. Start by logging into the Aplus.Net Control Panel at http://cp.aplus.net using your Registration Number and Customer Password.
  2. Select Web Hosting from the top navigation bar.
  3. Next, select Hosted Domains and click on Manage Hosted Domains.
  4. Now, select your domain name (NOTE: if your actual domain name does not yet resolve to Aplus.Net’s servers, you must use your utility domain (username.win.aplus.net) to manage your DSN).
  5. Next, click on the Manage DSN Records icon.
    1. MS Access Data Source Name:

                                                              i.      Click on the Microsoft Access button. A Create/Modify popup window will appear.

ii.      Enter your Data Source Name (required).

                                                           iii.      Enter a description (optional).

iv.      If your .mdb file is protected by a username and password, enter that information in the Username and Password field. If not, leave those fields blank.

                                                            v.      Select an .mdb file from the Microsoft Access drop-down menu (required).

    1. MS SQL Data Source Name:

                                                              i.      Click on the Microsoft SQL button. A Create/Modify popup window will appear.

ii.      Enter your Data Source Name (required).

                                                           iii.      Enter a description (optional).
