How can I register my own nameserver?

Answer by: Stuart Pierce, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support.

Name Servers control how a domain name is resolved. In most cases, you have to use the Name Servers of your hosting company which are already registered and managed by your hosting company’s DNS administrators. However, you can also register your own name servers. We recommend that you Register Own Name Servers, if you understand how Name Servers work and you are ready to manage your own DNS Application. You can only register name servers with the same registrar that your domain name is registered with.

I. If you have a Names4Ever.Com Account (consist of numbers only) associated with your domain registration you can use the Names4Ever.Com Control Panel to register your own name servers:

  1. Start by logging into the Names4Ever Control Panel at http://cp.names4ever.com. Use your Registration Number and Customer Password.
  2. Select the Domain Management icon.
  3. Select the domain name you’d like to register name servers with.
  4. Click the Manage Nameservers button.

Note: The Manage Nameservers tool works with single domain name only.

  1. Review the selection and click Proceed.
  2. Click the Manage Own Name Servers link.
  3. Enter the hostname that you’d like to register for your own name server.
  4. Enter the IP address of the actual machine that is running your DNS Application software.
  5. Finally, click the Register New Name Server button.

Note: All DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to take effect. Once your own name servers are registered, you can use them for all your registered domain names.

II. If you have an Aplus.Net account (starting with AP) associated with your domain name registration, please send an email to support@aplus.net including the following information:

  1. The Registration Number associated with your domain name registration.
  2. The Challenge Answer associated with that Registration Number.
  3. The host name of the name server (Example: ns1.yourdomain.com) and the IP address of your name server. (Note: You can register more than one if needed, just include all the host names and the IP addresses.)
  4. Your name servers will be registered within 24-48 hours.
