MIME
(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) is a standard system for
identifying the type of data contained in a file based on its
extension. A method used by Web browsers to associate files of a
certain type with applications that display files of that type.
If
you find that a browser does not recognize the particular extension for
a file hosted on your site, you can add the new MIME type using the MIME
Types configuration tool.
Here’s
how:
- Start
by logging into the Aplus.Net Control Panel at http://cp.aplus.net
using your Registration Number and Customer Password.
- Select
Web Hosting from the top navigation bar.
- Next,
select Hosted Domains and click on Manage
Hosted Domains.
- Now,
select the hosted domain that you’d like to manage.
- Click
the MIME Types icon.
- Select
the website location containing the files needing the new MIME type
from the Select the Web site location…
drop-down menu.
- Now,
in the Enter MIME Type Information dialogue, enter
the MIME type for the file into the Type and Sub type
field. This entry should list the main type, then a slash, and then the
subtype, as in the examples below.
For
a full list of available MIME types visit:
http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/mime-types.shtml.
text/plain
message/partial
application/octet-stream
- Enter
the File Extension into the File
extension field. This entry should always start with a dot
(.), as in .jpeg or .html.
- Click
Add Mime Type when finished. Repeat Steps
7 and 8 as necessary.
