How can I change the initial default message sent to subscribers in my mailing list?

The message sent on subscription/unsubscription consists of two parts.

The first part is hard coded into the mailing list scripts and we don't recommend changing it because it may break the mailing list.

You can review and edit the second part of the messages though. This can be done by manually editing the text files "subscribe.txt" and "unsubscribe.txt", which can be found in your "mail/.etc" directory.
