How can i install a self-signed (dummy) secure certificate?

Answer by: George Kaloyanov, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol designed to enable encrypted, authenticated connection across the Internet. SSL is used mostly in communication between web browsers and web servers. URL's that begin with 'https' indicate that an SSL connection will be used. Online shopping sites frequently use SSL technology to safeguard credit card information. In order to use the SSL protocol you need to have an SSL certificate which is used for the server authentication, data encryption, and message integrity checks.

With the Secure Server Tool in the Aplus.Net Control Panel (available with Pro Unix, eCommerce Unix, and eCommerce Windows plans), you can install a secure certificate. A self signed (dummy) SSL certificate can be installed so that you can use it without purchasing a secure certificate from a Certificate Authority. If you want to buy your own SSL certificate issued by a Certificate Authority you have to use this self signed (dummy) certificate as your actual certificate signing request. You will need the certificate signing request that is generated by the Secure Server tool in the Control Panel to request and buy your own certificate.

Important: You can purchase your certificate from any Certificate Authority using the Secure Server tool. You need to mention that your server software is Apache+mod_ssl, if you have Pro Unix or eCommerce Unix hosting plan.

Here’s how to generate and activate your self signed certificate  (Certificate Signing Request):

  1. Start by logging into the Aplus.Net Control Panel at http://cp.aplus.net using your Registration Number and Customer Password.
  2. Select Web Hosting from the top navigation bar.
  3. Next, select Hosted Domains and click on Manage Hosted Domains.
  4. Now, select the hosted domain that you’d like to manage.
  5. Click on the Secure Server icon.
  6. Click on the Generate Key, CSR & CRT button.
  1. Enter the information required for your SSL certificate and click Generate SSL Key.
  1. Click the Main Screen button on the confirmation page in order to go back to the Secure Server tool.
  2. Click the Install SSL button to install and activate the new SSL certificate.

Your self signed certificate is now installed and you can start accessing your website using https instead of http. You can also use the certificate signing request code to purchase a SSL certificate form any authority.

Disclaimer: If you choose to buy an SSL certificate from a Certificate Authority, do not delete your Certificate Signing Request from the Control Panel. Just obtain your certificate code from the Certificate Authority and use the Secure Server tool to update your Certificate Signing Request code.

Important: Aplus.Net has developed in the web Control Panel a tool (Secure Server Certificate) for purchase and installation of a commercial certificate issued by a Certificate Authority. The whole process is automatic and user-friendly. Although you may obtain a commercial certificate from any company, we recommend that you get your SSL certificate from Aplus.Net to ensure its seamless integration with your web site.
