Question categories:  Email

can I change the outgoing port # to 25 and not 587?

Answer by: Frederique Taillefer, Aplus.Net Knowledge Base Support.

The outgoing port number is dependent on which SMTP servers you use:

  • If you use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider, you can leave the outgoing port number set to 25, and leave all default settings in you email client.
  • However, if your Internet Service Provider does not provide SMTP servers, or you would rather use Aplus.Net’s SMTP server, you can use smtp.yourdomain.com as an outgoing mail server. You need to make a few other changes.
  1. Enable SMTP service

                                                              i.      Log on to your control panel at http://cp.aplus.net using your registration number and password.

ii.      Select the Emails link from the top navigation bar.

iii.      Next, select Email Boxes and click on Manage Email Boxes.

iv.      Click on the e-mail account that you’d like to manage.

                                                            v.      Select the Enable/Disable SMTP service icon.

vi.      Adjust the SMTP Server drop-down menu to read Enabled.

vii.      Click Modify to set up the SMTP server. Click Cancel to escape.

  1. In your email client, make sure you check the box next to the field “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”, and set the outgoing (SMTP) port number to 587.
